Ronak M. Patel, MD
Dr. Ronak Patel is a Fellowship-Trained Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in sports medicine injuries for adolescents and adults. He offers a full range of care for all problems of the knee and shoulder with a special interest in complex knee disorders.
Dr. Patel is among a small number of physicians in Chicago performing advanced cartilage restoration and meniscal transplantation procedures. He also performs anatomic ACL reconstructions enabling optimal performance, patellar stabilization procedures, and robotic partial knee replacements. He is extensively trained in arthroscopic management of shoulder problems including impingement, rotator cuff and labral tears and has written academically on the management of glenohumeral instability.
Dr. Patel's approach to patient care is individualized, based on each patient's injury and their level of function. He uses minimally invasive and arthroscopic procedures and treats patients based on evidence from orthopaedic research.
Dr. Patel believes that in sports medicine, it is essential to know when 'not to operate'. His focus is on prolonging the life of the native joint as long as possible. To that end, he uses cartilage restoration, osteotomies to reduce stress on the joint, stem cell and platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection therapy and other orthobiologic techniques to promote tissue healing and joint longevity.
Dr. Patel was born in Chicago and grew up in Naperville, completing his undergraduate, medical school and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Northwestern University. He then completed his fellowship at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, working with internationally known surgeons and building his expertise in the most innovative orthopaedic procedures. He brings experience and a belief in team-based, collaborative care to the American Knee Institute and Hinsdale Orthopaedics. He enjoys teaching medical students, residents and fellows and is frequently asked to teach and speak at conferences throughout the world.
